CURATORS’ STATEMENT
Without Borders features two-and three-dimensional works that break with conventional boundaries of the traditional square or rectangular format. The selection includes fiber and paper installations, wall relief sculpture, freestanding sculpture, photography, video, stitched compositions, and paintings.
Virginia S. Block explained, “We were looking for work that not only stretched the limitations of the traditional boundaries that artists work within, but also the manner in which the artists used their materials and mediums.” Without Borders is the first exhibit at SMI’s Academy Square Galleries to include two site-specific installations: one featuring the work of Kansas City textile artist Lauren Sobchak and the other featuring the work of South Orange collagist Florence Weisz.
April Tracey feels that “Without the use of borders, a certain type of flow exists throughout the exhibition, the works connecting to one another through elements of color, line, texture, and form creating an overall sense of unity.”
