August 2014: Art in Nature

August 2014: Art in Nature

274 Old Short Hills Road, Short Hills NJ.
Hours: Monday, Tuesday: 10am to 4pm, Sunday: 10am to 5pm

Studio Montclair and Greenwood Gardens announce the opening of “Art in Nature,” an outdoor contemporary sculpture exhibition on the grounds of Greenwood Gardens, a 28 + acre privately run garden in Short Hills, NJ. The exhibition was curated by art historian and critic Karen Wilkin and will feature the work of 30 artists, including William Tucker, Jon Isherwood, Anne Arnold, Mia Westerlund Roosen, and John Clement.

“Art in Nature punctuates the splendid terraces and walks of Greenwood Gardens with a selection of work by distinguished current sculptors ranging from expressive figures and stylized animals to geometric abstractions, and a lot in between,” notes Wilkin. “Unexpected harmonies are revealed, as a provocative conversation develops between works of art and an elegantly disciplined natural world.”
Featuring 39 sculptures representing 31 artists, the works in Art in Nature are varied, ranging from Mia Westerlund Roosen’s “Eminence,” a mysterious and suggestive abstract work of industrial felt and resin to Jon Isherwood’s “Turning Points,” two large granite forms that appear light and animated despite their massive bulk.  Other highlights are William Tucker’s expressive bronze sculpture “Horse X” and Anne Arnold’s “Bill,” one of an extensive series of animal sculptures described by The New York Times as “delightful and humorous.”
Free and open to the public, this reception celebrates the exhibition opening with refreshments on the terrace.

About Greenwood Gardens

Astride the western ridge of the Watchung Mountains and overlooking a vast preserve of forest and meadow, Greenwood Gardens is a contemporary garden rooted in the Arts & Crafts and Classical approaches to garden design, with Italianate garden terraces, grottoes, meandering moss-covered paths, allees of sycamore and spruces, ornamental trees and shrubs, and wildflower meadows, among other features, occupying over 28 acres.
Just 45 minutes from Manhattan, Greenwood Gardens is removed from the sights and sounds of modernity. It is a place where people can come together to spend time and relax – whether the definition of relaxation be sitting on bench or practicing yoga in the open air. A visit to Greenwood Gardens can renew your mind and spirit through tours, workshops, and other educational programs.
