September 2018: Art Lotto

Studio Montclair and The Creativity Caravan present the exhibit, “Art Lotto,” an artist-based, community-oriented portrait show. The exhibit will be on view from September 15 through November 10, 2018 at the Studio Montclair Gallery, 127 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair, NJ. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 15 from 7 to 9pm.

Studio Montclair’s Inaugural Community Partnership Exhibition Program!

Every year Studio Montclair will partner with another nonprofit or creative organization to produce an exciting collaborative exhibition. These partnerships will be designed to inspire our membership, create new connections, and to reach new audiences.

For the first exhibition, SMI partnered with The Creativity Caravan, the inspiration was their emphasis on community outreach and building community through artistic practice.

About Art Lotto

Art Lotto Montclair was inspired by Art Lotto Harrisonburg (Virginia), a concept which started in 2012 as a conversation between two friends, Brandy Somers and Denise Kanter Allen, over tacos. In the summer of 2016 during their Tiny Book Show Tour, Amy Tingle and Maya Stein of The Creativity Caravan were eating breakfast in nearby Lynchburg, Virginia when they stumbled across an article detailing the show in a local newspaper. They contacted Somers and Kanter-Allen to find out more, and the two women women generously offered to allow Amy and Maya to bring the idea to Montclair, on the sole condition that they play along in the Harrisonburg edition first.

Art Lotto brings artists together in a new and different way. Each artist is paired with another to create a portrait, but the artists are not paired with each other. The experience invites connection and, to some degree, a collaboration, as partners are invited to meet beforehand to share their own work, background, styles, and sensibilities. Art Lotto also invites artists to stretch outside their usual medium, if desired, and to experiment with portraiture with unexpected or unconventional materials and techniques. The result is a wonderfully deep and diverse collection of work that brings together a community of artists and paints a broader landscape of the creative community of Montclair as a whole.

We are overjoyed and proud to bring Art Lotto here to Montclair for the first time. We hope you enjoy the show!
