Human and animal images, and hybrid forms with elements of both, have been artistic subjects since the beginning of time. Works featuring these subjects, including prehistoric cave paintings and the earliest sculptural forms, have endured and continue to exert their magic and power even today. Ancient creators may have intended their images and forms to touch an emotional chord within their audience. They understood or sensed the immense creative and imaginative potential of these forms. The same holds true for many modern and contemporary artists who have made similar subject matter part of their art. One can think of artists as varied as Picasso, Franz Marc, Soutine, Alice Neel, Joseph Beuys, Damian Hirst, and Jeff Koons who use these themes as subject matter for their work.
“Bodies & Soul” presents the work of 22 artists who find inspiration and value in the exploration of these age-old themes. Their work acknowledges the impact that the mythic and emotional continue to exert on our creative and imaginary lives.
