5/17 – 8/12, 2013, Studio Montclair (SMI) announces “Fashion as Muse,” an exhibit on view from May 17 to August 12, 2013. The exhibit will take place in Studio Montclair’s galleries at Academy Square, the SMI Gallery @ Academy Square and the SMI Virginia S. Block Gallery, located on the first and second floors of Academy Square 33 Plymouth Street in Montclair. All are invited to the opening reception that will coincide with the Montclair Gallery Walk on Friday, May 17, from 6 to 9 pm.
“State of the Art 2013,” an exhibit on view from January 23 to April 22, 2013, featuring the most recent work of SMI members. All are invited to the opening reception on Friday, January 25, from 7 to 9 pm.
“Shades of Abstraction,” is on view from September 14 to December 18, 2012, at the SMI Gallery @ Academy Square. “Shades of Abstraction,” curated by Patricia Selden and Pam Cooper, examines the many shades of abstraction, which can include Op Art, Geometric Abstraction, Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, Sculpture, and Minimal Art. Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color, and line to create a composition that may exist with a degree of independence from visual references. Abstraction indicates a departure from the accurate representation of reality that can be slight, partial, or complete. The works of art in this exhibition exist along this continuum, and include painting, photography, collage, and mixed media.
September 14 – December 18, 2012. “Linear Vernacular: The Language of Line,” curated by Gallery Directors Virginia S. Block and Karen Nielsen-Fried, shows the unlimited ways artists use line, the most basic of elements, in their artwork.

Block & Karen Nielsen-Fried, presents artwork showing figures in interior spaces and landscapes. curated by gallery directors, Virginia S. Block & Karen Nielsen-Fried, explores the human figure as interpreted by artists in both realistic and abstract forms. Artwork in several mediums is included. 5/18 – 8/14. “Portraits: Beneath the Surface,” curated by Janet Boltax, encompasses a wide interpretation of what portraiture is, both traditional and contemporary, reflecting the character and inner life of both the sitter and the artist. Gallery Hours are: Monday – Friday 7am – 7pm.

Color is the messenger as well as the message in “Full Spectrum,” which explores the limitless expressive and aesthetic possibilities when artists are inspired by color. Saturated, bold, or delicately nuanced, unconventionally combined, harmonious or discordant: color for the sake of beauty and/or impact.
