Guideline for framing work for an SMI exhibition.
All artwork must be wired for hanging, no sawtooth hangers.  We will not hang unwired work.  Each piece should be clearly labeled with the artist’s name and title.

The artwork should to be presented in a professional manner. If the work is on paper, the image should be surrounded by adequate space such as when presented in a traditional matted and framed format. Unframed canvas should be finished neatly.
Plexiglass may be used, but the clips and the hanging device must be secure and not require any special devices for hanging. If matted, the matte must fit to the edge of the plexiglass. If not matted, the edges surrounding the image should be clean.
Can I enter an exhibition if I am not a member?

Yes. Anyone can submit work for an SMI exhibition. But if your work is accepted for an exhibit you must become a member at that time. We ask that artists who do not intend to become members, refrain from submitting work.

Can my images be framed under plexiglass and held with clips?
Yes, this method of framing is acceptable. However, the clips and the hanging device must be secure and not require any special device to hang it.

Why is there an entry fee and a commission on sales for the Annual Exhibition (ViewPoints)?
An enormous amount of work, time and money goes into producing this type of exhibit. SMI doesn’t actually make any money from this exhibit – the fees we charge cover rent, juror fee, reception. administration, publicity, catalog, graphics, installation, and deinstallation.
We are a non-profit artist member organization run mainly by volunteers. We are very proud of the ViewPoints annual exhibit – we work hard every year to find excellent jurors and produce a high quality exhibit of contemporary art. Although we could jury it online, we actually have our juror spend a day in the gallery space as they view and select the work – we feel that this way they really see the submitted work to its best advantage.  We have been partnering with Aljira for the last few years as our venue, it is a beautiful space in downtown Newark, a city with a lot of artistic energy.
I keep applying to exhibits, but don’t get in. Aren’t I guaranteed the opportunity to show my work?

Although our goal is to provide exhibiting exposure for our artist members, we cannot guarantee acceptance into any show other than our annual member show. Most of our exhibits are curated or juried by independent artists/curators. We try to provide our membership with a wide range of jurors and themes. In this way, we hope that we are providing SMI members a chance to get their work in front of many different curators and art professionals – a valuable exposure in and of itself. Besides exhibiting opportunities, SMI provides networking events, programs, critique groups, local discounts and our weekly hot list email. Most of these are free or at a reduced fee for members.

I paid online, when do I become a member?

As soon as you pay, you are officially an SMI member eligible to enter any of our exhibits for free or a reduced fee.

Can I be in an exhibition if I am not a member?

We ask that all exhibiting artists be members because we are a non-profit member organization. The people who hang the exhibition, write and disseminate publicity, set up and purchase the reception, run the reception, set up programming, and whatever else comes up are all member volunteers. Since we are mainly funded by our membership, the annual membership fee pays for the receptions, the publicity, and the administrative work. Other members are paying for the exhibiting artists to be in an exhibit – if we allowed non-members to exhibit it wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the membership.

For your membership fee you get many benefits including the opportunity to submit to at least 5 shows per year with no entry fee, a reduced entry fee for our annual international exhibit, networking opportunities, critique groups, educational programs,  a weekly opportunities email, and guaranteed inclusion in our annual member show.
