Studio Montclair presents “Full Circle,” a new exhibit in which the member artists explore fresh artistic perspectives about the circle. The show totals 40 pieces, chosen to offer a varied selection of media, subject matter, styles, and rhythms. The exhibit will be held at Montclair Public Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ) from June 4 through June 28, 2013. All are invited to attend an opening reception on Thursday, June 6 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
“Some examples in the show display literal interpretations of the shape, such as the round ceramics by Lynda D’Amico, Barbara Bonnie Deutsch, and Lisa G. Westheimer. Jim Price’s acrylic on wood piece also uses the circle to add to his work’s formal impact. Other works, such as Heather Shaw’s photograph Whirling Dervish, demonstrate how the circle assumes a rich, subtle role among a piece’s formal qualities,” Allan Gorman, the curator of “Full Circle” explained. “The hidden igloo shape in Marcia Miele Branca’s drawing, and the mixed media assemblage of Julie Levine,” Gorman added, “offer similar opportunities for creative exploration, as well as encouraging the viewer to engage their works on multiple levels.”
Other artists featured in the exhibit include: Susanna Baker, Ron Brown, Noel Farese, Sarah Fattori, Irene Feigen, Leslie A. Ford, Alison Golder, Suzanne Henning, Helen Kaar, Catherine Kinkade, Maria Lupo, Fernando Mariscal, Laura McKeon, Cat Morris, Nancy Ori, Herbie Pabst, Sharon Pitts, Matt Roberts, Jen Somma, Michael Steinbrick, Linda Streicher, Irv Suss, Theodosia A.G. Tamborlane, Marianne Trent, Miriam Untoria, Linda Vonderschmidt-LaStella, Laurie Waite-Fellner, Diane Whitebay, Lisa Zampano and Tony Zaza.
Collectively, the works chosen for “Full Circle” leave one with an appreciative impression of this basic geometric. “They illuminate the notion that the gravity caused by the spinning globe we live on defines the way we see,” Gorman observed. “This shape’s global omnipresence also powerfully influences the belief that what we call ‘life’ fits a circular structure.”
Exhibit curator Allan Gorman is an accomplished painter and active member of Studio Montclair. Mr. Gorman is the recipient of a 2013 Fellowship for Painting from the NJ State Council on the Arts, a President’s Award from the organizers of ArtExpo|New York, and a Residency Fellowship from The Vermont Studio center in 2011.
Gorman concluded that “Full Circle” provides visual confirmation of a “continuing, and still vital, artistic exploration of this essential form—a journey whose roots include the arts of ancient Greece, the Italian Renaissance, as well as the giants of contemporary art.”
