About the Artists
Artists Statement: Suzanne Auer
Q: What’s Your Favorite Color? I know you’ve been asked about this. Kids talk a lot about this.
Suzanne Auer: My favorite color is the color of new leaves in spring. That green makes me smile no matter where I see it -on a wall, on clothes, or in a painting. The funny thing is, I’ve been painting blue paintings recently. Planning a painting around a color then creating a visual path through it is how i work. Focusing on a subject allows me to do this and helps me get the feeling that I’m looking at my favorite places and things once again.
Suzanne Auer received her BFA in Gold and Silversmith from SUNY New Paltz. After a few years in the jewelry business she started her own business painting children’s clothes and murals. This led to creating The Art Studio, a 20 plus year business teaching children and adults in a relaxed atmosphere in Highland Mills, NY. She is now retired and painting every free moment she gets. Her students have inspired her and her paintings through all these years and she is grateful to them!
Suzanne is also a Member of Woodbury Art Council, Nyack Arts Collective, and Studio Montclair. She has been featured in shows at Roost Restaurant and Union Arts Center, Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut, Rockland Arts Festival, Goshen Fall Festival, Tuxedo Park Library, and The Art Studio.
Artists Statement: Martine Kasmin
Martine Kasmin is a graduate of The School of Visual Arts in NYC where she studied on a full-tuition merit scholarship. After graduation, Martine originally worked as an illustrator. Some of her clients included New York Magazine, American illustration, Art Direction Magazine, and MTV Networks. But illustration was never a good fit. Feeling unfulfilled as an illustrator, Martine became an educator and worked for many years as a special education teacher in the New Jersey Public Schools. However, art continued to be her passion and calling.
Martine credits the pandemic with helping her recommit to her paintings. With more time and a small studio space, she was able to rediscover her love of art. Martine is inspired by the natural world, the female figure in the landscape, and the emotional act of putting marks and color on canvas.
Since rediscovering her love of painting, Martine’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries in the tri-state area including: Studio Montclair Inc, ACL Gallery, The Gaelen Art Gallery, and Gallery 40 Poughkeepsie. Her work is inspired by a diverse group of artists, including Willem De Kooning, El Greco, Joan Mitchell, and Chaim Soutine.
Martine would like to thank her husband, Craig Kasmin for his support putting this exhibition together. He has always been a champion of her work and a supporter of her passions.
