CURATOR’S STATEMENT
A while ago, I saw an exhibition in Chelsea where the artist talked about how his process consisted of paintings first and then sketches about his paintings, this helped him to more clearly understand his own direction. I thought this was really interesting, and it got me thinking about how different each artist works and how inspiring it is to see the creative process.
For this exhibit, I chose 6 artists who work in different mediums and with different methods:
- I chose a photographer, Ananda Lima who uses digital technology combined with classic techniques to create thoughtful and thought provoking portraits.
- Sculptor Gina Casolaro Murray chose to show a few different glass techniques. She bravely shared successes and failures in this very process intensive medium.
- Master pastelist and painter Catherine Kinkade shared the making of a commissioned painting. Her well documented, controlled process is in sharp contrast to the beautiful, loose work of the finished product.
- Jennifer Anne Moses, a writer and painter makes use of language in her art. Her scribbles and musings are as delightful as her finished pieces.
- Working from a place of spirituality, Linda Vonderschmidt-LaStella shows ceramic pieces that form a series that began with angels and organically transitioned to earth elements.
- Mixed media artist Gail Hillow Watkins provided us with a window into her system of building modern day icons.
An artist doesn’t always have the opportunity to exhibit all their work and as I visited each artist’s studio it became clear that everyone had something they wanted to show and explain. Working with each artist to understand their method and figuring out how to display it in the best way possible, became a process in itself. The resulting exhibit gives the viewer a unique look at how each artist works to achieve their goals.
