About the Artists

Window 1: Denise Toney

Denise Toney is a multi-disciplinary artist who delves primarily into fiber art, découpage, quilting, and mixed media using predominantly African, Aboriginal, Dutch, Chinese, and other imported fabrics as well as domestic textiles.

She has been selected for several juried art exhibitions at: The Morris Museum – New Jersey’s only Smithsonian Affiliate, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey (solo exhibition), Newark Arts Festival (2021, 2019 & 2018), East Orange City Hall, West Orange Arts Council, Studio Montclair, Bloomfield Civic Center, Manufacturers’ Artist Village, Art in the Atrium, Inc., The Bridge Art Gallery, and i19 Gallery (an exhibition of international artists). As an avid collector of imported textiles, Denise has been invited to offer her contributions to several artists’ talks and panel discussions. She is in five publications: “On the Easel” – where artists share their works in progress, Bella Magazine, “The God-S Movement Coloring Journal” by Artist Yvonne Onque, and “SheEO’s Rock! – 99 Tips to Transform Your Business Today” as a contributing author who appears on the book’s front
cover, and an excerpt from her quilt is published on the back cover of The Morris Museum’s catalog. Denise is an awardee of Art in the Atrium, Inc.’s Black Artist Resilience grant.

Denise Toney: Behold in Textiles

The Mediums
My window exhibition is a showcase of fiber art: traditional quilting, patchwork, appliqué, and fabric collage featuring imported textiles. I LOVE color, and I have a penchant for bodacious prints. Earth tones, which are reminiscent of the colors that I grew up with within my home,  dominate my art.

The Processes
I feel like the fabrics I carefully curate are works of art within themselves and I am like an alchemist of sorts who mixes and merges them together, thereby creating an altogether new piece of fabric to play with. Knowing when to flex and when to use restraint is a constant dance I do with my fabrics in my studio. All of my arrangements are extremely calculated. I take painstaking care to make sure that the prints, design scales, and textures of the fabrics complement one another or contrast when more appropriate. Sometimes I “paint” with the medium of fabric
like a painter paints with his or her paints. Sometimes my sewing machines are my tools of choice, and sometimes I combine both techniques into one mixed media piece.

The Fabrics
Many of my fabrics really are imported from African marketplaces – from mudcloth by way of Mali to kente that hails from Ghana to ankara from Nigeria to khorogo from the Ivory Coast – in addition to some Aboriginal, Dutch, and Chinese textiles. As an avid collector of fabric for decades, many of the fabrics that I use have an ancient and sometimes royal history to them. Most of my Pieces contain vintage, limited-edition fabrics that are no longer easily available today. While it is heartbreaking to see some go, new fabrics come out every day, which fuels my excitement afresh about creating my artwork. Much of my artwork features a focal point that pays tribute to some uplifting concepts about African life and traditions, and so the viewer will see symbols that contain deeper meanings such as ankhs and other Egyptian symbols, the Sankofa bird and other Adinkra symbols that are interspersed all throughout West Africa where many Africans in the Diaspora descend.

My Canvases
I tend to create on unconventional canvases although I also create wall art. I love the element of surprise that creating art on unconventional canvases evoke. I strive to create pieces that people would love to have in their spaces and even on themselves as I also extend what I do into wearable art. I believe that our whole styles of living can be works of art if we make it so. For me, it is very much that way, and I invite you to “listen to my song” through my window exhibition here at Studio Montclair.

My Background
Mandatory electives like art, sewing, and wood shop became classes that I took on my own volition. In high school, I was the only girl who willfully signed up for wood shop. Those teachings are still carrying me today which is why as a former youth / young adult educator, I made sure to incorporate some art whenever and wherever I could with the hope of reaching students who might have had artistic desires, but not so much the opportunities. We do not choose what zip codes where we happen to be born, raised, or schooled. In underserved communities, art classes are often the first to be defunded, but, as an artist, I staunchly believe budding artists absolutely deserve equal opportunity to reach their highest potential no matter what. Prior to the pandemic, I have also taught sewing classes within my own studio, and I have been invited to contribute to artists’ talks and panel discussions.

Window 2: Janette Afsharian

Janette Afsharian is an Iranian American graphic artist and painter based in Montclair, NJ. She has painted off and on since she was young but has resisted showing her work, until now. It took the pandemic and many free nights for her to finally embrace her love of painting and show her artwork. Her heritage is Iranian American (Texan) which has an influence on her work that is not obvious to the casual viewer. The layers of different cultural systems are represented in the chaos of lines in many of her paintings.

Collection:  Linear Motion – According to Newton’s first law (also known as the principle of inertia), a straight line; may be regarded as in motion or at rest by different observer

Collection summary: These unique abstract line paintings are open for interpretation by the viewer. Some see aerial perspectives while others see buildings, roller coasters, or bridges. To the artist Janette Afsharian, the lines represent intersecting and overlapping thoughts of life. The intent with each painting is to find structure and balance from chaos.

Window 3: Barry Fredericks

Mr. Fredericks began painting in 1958 while participating in a Master’s Program in Art History at Ohio State University, where he had received his BA degree. After receiving an LLB from the University of Michigan he continued painting in 1960, studying at the Cochrane Gallery of Art in Washington DC. After a hiatus of over 50 years ago he has recently refocused his attention on painting. Mr. Fredericks has studied at One River Art School, The Art School at Old Church and Bergen Community College and now continues his work with the Bulgarian artist Vessellina Traptcheva.

Mr. Fredericks ‘work has appeared in several New Jersey galleries in both group and one-man shows. In 2016 he had a successful one-man show in an established art gallery in the Chelsea Section of New York City in 2017 at a gallery in Wyckoff New Jersey and in 2018 in Ridgewood New  Jersey. He has been awarded 1st Prize as an Emerging Artist Jury Show in Ringwood New Jersey and his paintings have been exhibited  New Jersey at the Belskie Museum, the Ferolle Gallery, the ZebriskieGallery, the Studio Montclair Gallery, and the President’s Gallery at Bergen Community College, the Fort Lee Public Library and City Hall in Jersey City. His work can be found in the art collection of Virgin Airways, and other private and public collections.

Mr. Fredericks’ body of work focuses on capturing a mood or expression and not the replication of visual image. Because the human faces is always expressive many of Mr. Frederick’s paintings use images of one or more persons to create his desired result. All works begin with a detailed charcoal drawing, color maybe added, using oil, acrylic, water color, pastel or any combination, in whole or in part, to achieve the desired effect.

Window 4: Charlotte Stanske

As the daughter of an artist, artistic forms of expression have always been a part of my life. My father taught me to view the world with an artist’s eye from a very young age. After nearly two decades of exploring different artistic mediums and
graduating from art college, I rediscovered watercolor painting. Finding a teacher at the Montclair Art Museum to show me different ways to use the medium and create unique compositions was key for me to move forward with watercolor. My career in Interior Design, and having worked and lived on both coasts, has influenced my design sense for painting and the compositions I create. Interior Design has also influenced me to explore more pattern and color study instead of only landscapes or still life paintings.
My current artistic journey in watercolor painting is focused on nature. Rediscovering the northeast renewed my artistic inspiration, and I enjoy living in an area with four seasons and all the changing colors, lights, moods, and sensibilities they bring. My style embraces both the illustrative and decorative, pattern and texture over landscape. I see the shapes or patterns of the subject matter and focus on this while developing my composition. Allowing myself to expand on the colors to create my version of reality.
Expanding into pattern design came naturally for me and this journey has reenergized my artistic side. I enjoy finding a pattern within a painting I created, or starting with an object to see how I can create a pattern. Dgital printing on textiles has allowed me to bring my art to different formats and create “useable art” for all to enjoy.
