“Shades of Abstraction,” is on view from September 14 to December 18, 2012, at the SMI Gallery @ Academy Square. An opening reception will be held at the gallery in the Academy Square building (33 Plymouth St., Montclair, NJ) on September 14, from 7 to 9 pm. The gallery is open to the public 7 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday.
“Shades of Abstraction,” curated by Patricia Selden and Pam Cooper, examines the many shades of abstraction, which can include Op Art, Geometric Abstraction, Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, Sculpture, and Minimal Art. Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color, and line to create a composition that may exist with a degree of independence from visual references. Abstraction indicates a departure from the accurate representation of reality that can be slight, partial, or complete. The works of art in this exhibition exist along this continuum, and include painting, photography, collage, and mixed media.
“The ten talented artists whose work was chosen for this exhibit are creative in using the language of abstraction as a vehicle to express themselves in interesting and new ways,” says Selden. The artists featured in this exhibit are: Judith Brice, Ron Brown, Marilyn Deitchman, Lorraine DeProspo, Thomas Francisco, Barry Jackson, Susan Lisbin, Clarence Mather, Isabel Pizzano, and Matt Roberts.
Patricia Selden is an Art Advisor for art collectors, businesses, and public art projects. She chaired the Montclair Arts Council (MAC) Public Art Committee, resulting in six completed projects. A professional educator and graduate of Christie’s Program in Art Connoisseurship and the Art Market, Selden teaches courses for Montclair State University on buying art and the art marketplace. She has juried and curated exhibitons for institutions on the east and west coasts.
Pam Cooper is a mixed media artist employing sculpture, papermaking, and printing. She has curated exhibitions for a number of non-profit organizations in the Metro area and has served as a corporate art consultant and curator for the past eight years. She is Assistant Director of the SMI Gallery @ Academy Square Gallery.
